Hi Posties & Advertisers!!

In the past, we've had some advertisers mention requirements for certain types of blogs, or blog categories. Now that it is a part of segmentation, we wanted to provide you with some further direction here. I realize it's been mentioned in other threads, we'll continue any of those communications here moving forward, tho.

In short, category means a focus or principal topic within a blog. What the reviewers are looking for is the main theme of your non-PPP posts within your blog. They look for the topic of the majority of those non-PPP posts. Unfortunately, there is no one formula to be provided because the beauty of blogging is that you can write about whatever you want. But fitting it into categories, well that's where we'd like to help.

Before we delve deeper, let me just say, we are considering adding more categories, and would like your input. :)

Ok, maybe some examples would help?

1) Blogger writes about every day life, interesting news articles, the last place they traveled, dinner at an awesome restaurant, needing to buy a new car, book they've read, and what movie they saw this past weekend. Well, that's kind of . . . life, and those are all great things to blog about! This type of blog, though, does not fall under categories of autos, movies, nightlife, recreation, shopping, & travel. While the blogger touched a little on each of these, there's no one focused topic.

2) Blogger (like us at PPP!!) has decided to lose a little weight. They document their progress while talking about what their plan of attack is. Starting out their doctor gave the ok, next they share stories about exercise classes they've joined, discuss a great new fitness magazine they've subscribed to, report on progress, & compare different exercise, stretching, diet, sleeping habits and approaches they've tried. What's worked, what hasn't, what would they recommend? If that's the purpose of the blog, and now and then the blogger discusses other things, their category would be Health & Fitness.

3) Can blogs ever have more than one category? Sure, sometimes two or more categories are intertwined. A blogger may be a photography aficionado, and also must have the best of the latest and greatest software for digital photography. If the blog informs the readers about just as many photography hints, pictures, great subjects, etc. as it makes mention of the software, hardware and equipment needed to get the best shots, this one can be categorized as photography and technology.

How do bloggers choose a category? Well, what is the focus of your blog? What do you find yourself writing about most times? Maybe an analogy would help. Think of the recipe for rice krispie treats:
4 Cups marshmallows
6 Cups rice krispies
3 Tablespoons butter/margarine
1 tsp vanilla
If this were your blog, marshmallows and rice krispies would be your categories. Butter & vanilla would just be some extra filler posts.

Remember, PPP always encourages you as posties to blog about what you find interest in. If you have a blog about Cooking, new recipes, visiting Paula Dean's restaurant, family night where everyone joins in making dinner . . . but you get a new ipod for your birthday, and you begin to realize how much you've been missing in the world of music. Maybe it's time to start a new blog about your new music interest. Or maybe you write about every day life, and you've decided to become a secret shopper. By all means, start a new blog with your awesome shopping stories! That's a specific focus!

And remember, there are still many, many advertisers that don't specify categories because they can benefit from all bloggers :)

Advertisers: An additional note when choosing categories . . . we'd like to encourage you to think beyond the bloggers taking the opportunities, and consider their readers, too. If you sell emergency kits for the car on your site, some of the obvious categories may be: autos and travel. But folks who read blogs about parenting, recreation, shopping may also be interested. Parenting: interested in keeping the family safe; Recreation: most people leave the house for things we consider 'recreation' so they will be spending a lot of time in their cars; and Shopping: readers of these blogs may be interested in finding news and reviews of useful products.

We'd like to hear what Posties and Advertisers would like to see as categories and why. Thanks!!!

Karen this goes against what Veronique shared with us this afternoon. She said the reviewers will be looking at the entire blog, including the opps we have taken.

Can you clarify with her and get back to us, please?
Thanks!

Hey Cass,

If we're thinking of the same spot in town hall meeting - Veronique mentioned we look to see if a certain amount of your posts are on a certain topic (in this case travel), then we also look at the opps you've taken. So really - this happens when the non-PPP opps are borderline. If we question if something is a true focus in non-PPP's but the blogger also takes several travel opp's from PPP, it acts like a bit of a boost toward that topic.

But if a blogger is borderline, talks about travel, their home business, movie nights on Fridays, and work plus their PPP posts are scattered, then - not really a travel as a focus.

So yes - we look at both, using the non-PPP's as our main guide. I can see why Veronique wouldn't have time in a town hall meeting to go into that detail.

Bottom line is PPP's ongoing goal is to match blogger's true interests to advertiser's true targets. So as a blogger, if you have a topic focus, and it's true to your own interest, you won't have anything to worry about.

For example: If I stay true to my non-PPP blog entries in areas of scrapbooking & family, I understand what my own interests are and I'm not going to take an opp that requires the category of travel because opp's I've taken in the past week have included Florida vacations, online hotel reservations, and a quaint Arizona B&B (all of which happily can be found in PPP's library of advertisers).

So - our main focus is in what you are writing aside from PPP. If the PPP opp's you take support the category even further, then they will be considered and can only help you as a blogger.

Why even ask us for our categories then? Why not just assign them. It isn't like we know our blogs better than you.

What about general bloggers like myself? I blog about everything. How are these category deals going to affect me?

That's something I'd like to know too. I don't want to have a bunch of different blogs on different subjects.

Categories are fine. But, on the flip side, advertisers need to know that by PICKING categories, they are excluding other blogs. Advertisers need to know they're probably aren't a whole lot of blogs going PPP that focus just on architecture. Or one just about diamonds. PPP needs to educate them, that a blog with a general focus is NOT a negative!

Great question! Because the focus of your blog can change. And if it does - it would be changed by you. People are dynamic, lives are dynamic - no one wants to be stuck in one category forever and ever.

Exactly. I do not want to have to start a bunch of niche blogs just to take opps.
I have enough trouble coming up with content for one blog all the time...LOL
But, because I am a general blogger, I am free to post about whatever strikes my fancy on one site, whenever it strikes me.
I have over 1,200 posts in my general category, but only 38 in education, 194 in another, 57 in another, and so on and so on.

Well, how 'bout some suggestions from posties. What new category can you think of that would include general bloggers and be attractive to advertisers? We want you blogging about the things you want!! I can't stress that enough. So what matches you: every day life? random thoughts? Tell us what category might capture this.

(Just fyi - I have to sign off for now, but keep asking the ?'s and I'll be back in the a.m.)

This hasn't answered the questions previously asked at all. I agree with Marisa, why bother asking us to choose our categories if then reviewers are going to decide that they are incorrect. It just doesn't make any sense. :? If we choose a category, and a reviewer disagrees, then we get a rejection and at the end of the mess everyone ends up frustrated. I have both general and niche blogs and this category system isn't making much sense for any of them right now.

Karen, that's not an answer. If I pick my categories but you decide my blog doesn't focus enough on those categories, my opinion does not count.

If I start to focus on something else but you decide it's still too general, my opinion does not count.

What's the point of giving my opinion about my blog when you and the reviewers get the final say? Just assign everyone a category and quit pretending that our take on our own blogs matter.
